The country code top level domain .np is assigned to Nepal. The Mercantile Communications Pvt. Ltd is the sponsoring organization for .np registration. This firm provides administrative and technical support for all the tasks related to .np domain registration. The domain names and domain naming system are managed and operated by the administrator.
The .np domain name can be registered for a period of two years on payment of registration fee $200.00. Local presence is required for .np domain registration. Second level domains such as .com.np (for commercial entities), .org.np (organizations), .edu.np (educational institutions), .net.np (network related services), gov.np (governmental organizations) and mil.np (for Nepal military services) can be registered. An organization or individual can apply for multiple domains.
The administrator registers .np domain names on a first-come first-served basis, applying the terms and conditions of .np registration. Anyone who applies for .np registration should follow these terms and regulations. Companies and organizations that need domain names must also produce the organization's registration certificate, an official letter signed by an authorized officer, admin/technical contact details, and so forth. An individual applying for .np domain name should provide a request letter, applicant's citizenship certificate and contact details.
Companies may select domain names based on the company name, brand name, service name etc, while an individual can select domain names the basis of his/her name. The .np domain name can include alphabetic and numeric characters. Hyphens are also included, but this cannot be used in the beginning or end of the domain names. The registered .np domain names should not be used for unlawful purposes.
